A few hours have passed since we wrapped up the opening weekend of the
2006 Krystal Square Off, so I have had a little bit of time to reflect. We witnessed some amazing things, most notably Sonya Thomas' performance this afternoon in the local finals. Sonya never faced any real challenges in this contest, but she still pushed herself to a personal best and to tie the American Record of 62 Krystals. I had the honor of being Sonya's judge today, which means I was only a couple feet away as she ate. It blew me away.
I've witnessed some outstanding eating from the splash zone in front of the table... Sonya edging out
Joey Chestnut 57 Krystals to 56 in the
05 Chattanooga Qualifier, Joey downing 62 Krystals in the
05 Championship but falling short as
Kobayashi devoured 67. Today was something special, though. Those efforts were amazing, but the big numbers were put up facing a big time competitor. Today Sonya's competitor wasn't standing at the table, he was sitting in Japan (maybe watching on the webcam). Today Sonya made a statement to Kobayashi and to Joey. The willpower and focus on display were unsurpassed. If she can put up a 62 without any real threat at the table with her, I can't wait to see what she can do when she is eating Krystals next to the top eaters in the world.
Sonya has definitely raised the bar. I can't wait to see what kind of numbers Joey,
Humble Bob, Bertoletti, and the other top eaters can put up this year. Speaking of which, stay tuned to the
Square Off site for info on who is eating in the upcoming Square Off Qualifiers.
